Why Is My Piercing Crusty

Raise your hand if you've ever looked at that crusty stuff on your new piercing and thought, “Wait, is this normal?!” Spoiler: Yes, totally normal—and no, it doesn't mean your piercing is dirty!

That flaky, crusty gunk around your piercing can be a real pain, can't it? It's just your body's natural way of healing itself. When you get pierced, your body sends out lymph fluid to clean the wound and protect it. That lovely fluid mixes with dead skin cells and a little bit of dried blood. Don't worry if you get those thin, crusty bits once it hits the air and dries – we've all been there!

See a light white, clear, or pale yellow crust? That's your immune system doing its job perfectly. It's a solid sign your piercing is healing just fine.

But hey, let's be clear—normal crust is one thing, infection is another.

Healthy healing crust: dry, flaky, white / clear / pale yellow, smells like nothing, and no swelling or pain.

Infected discharge: thick, gooey green or bright yellow pus, stinks, and comes with swelling, redness, and soreness.

So, the golden rule: Just don't pick, peel, or scratch them off! Honestly, just leave them be. If you pick at them, you can damage the fresh, fragile skin, which can cause bleeding, slow healing, and increase the risk of infection. Just gently clean the area with sterile saline as part of your daily routine, and let it do its thing. It'll clear up on its own.
