What Is Rose Quartz?

Rose quartz, also known as "fenghuang stone", is a soft pink quartz mineral. Its colour primarily stems from trace amounts of titanium, iron or manganese. Renowned worldwide as the most iconic "stone of love" within the crystal family, it is celebrated for its gentle energy and heart-healing properties. Unlike many transparent crystals, rose quartz usually forms in the form of masses or nodules, containing tiny rutile needle inclusions. These inclusions create a unique star effect, also known as the cat's eye effect, and lend the stone its soft, delicate hue.

The Science Behind Rose Quartz

From what we know so far, rose quartz is a trigonal crystal, made up of SiO₂, and has a hardness of 7 on Mohs' scale. It also has a vitreous luster. Its pink colour is usually due to the way light is scattered (Tyndall effect) by tiny rutile-like particles in the crystal, or by impurities like aluminum phosphate and manganese phosphate. It's a great material for making jewellery and decorative items because it's so stable. Science says there's no solid proof of its supernatural healing powers, but its unique vibrational frequency is believed to match up with the human biomagnetic field, possibly providing psychological benefits.

Does this sound a bit complex? You'll need to know a bit about chemistry.

The History & Culture of Rose Quartz

For me, the best bit is the historical journey. Rose quartz is said to date back thousands of years. In Mesopotamian and ancient Egyptian civilisations, it was used to make amulets and seals that symbolised love and beauty. In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, rose quartz was closely associated with Aphrodite (Venus), the goddess of love. Legend has it that it was formed from drops of her blood, which gave it the power to heal emotional wounds. In Eastern cultures, pink is often seen as a colour of good luck and harmony, which is why rose quartz is used to encourage family harmony and romantic love. These days, it's one of the world's most popular crystals, used in spiritual healing and fashion accessories.

Common Types of Rose Quartz

There are two main types: one based on where they come from and the other based on their colour.

Pink Quartz Classified by Origin

Madagascar pink quartz: It's got these really rich, vibrant colours, mostly pink but with an orange undertone. There are some rare older ones too, and they're more purple. But it often has lots of internal inclusions and cracks – as the saying goes, "No cracks, no Madagascar pink." With high production volumes, prices are still pretty reasonable, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand yuan. You can charge more for cleaner crystals.

Mozambique Pink Quartz: It's got clear, see-through crystals that make it easy to get clean beads, but the colour is a bit lighter. Prices are between a few hundred and over a thousand, and pinker hues cost more. Some of the pieces are so clear that they're almost see-through, and they're called "Mozambique Ice" because of that.

Brazilian Pink Quarts (Brazilian Pink): It's a soft pink colour, lighter than Madagascar pink but deeper than Mozambique pink, and it falls within the warm pink spectrum. A small portion of the colour has a faint purple undertone. Most of them are translucent to slightly transparent, with a few high-quality pieces that are almost ice-like. Common internal features include fine cracks or fluffy inclusions; flawless specimens are rare. Prices are usually in the hundreds.

Pink Quartz by Texture

Ice-like Pink Quartz Crystal: It's really clear, like ice, and the colour is nice and even. It's got minimal inclusions, too. Prices are usually between 300 and 1,000 yuan, with top-quality ice-type specimens going for a few hundred yuan per gram.

Star-effect Pink Quartz: It's got this six-rayed star effect (cat's eye effect) that really stands out under strong light, especially when it's cut with cabochons. You often see six-pointed star patterns in bracelets, especially in really transparent ones. Prices are higher, ranging from hundreds to thousands of yuan. If something is more transparent and has more star effects, it'll usually cost more.

Furong Pink Quartz: It comes from Mozambique and is a bright pink colour with high transparency. Crystals don't have white streaks, they're shiny, and they're better quality and value for money. Prices generally exceed 1,000 yuan, positioning it as a premium category within pink quartz.

Grapefruit Pink Quartz: It's got a unique colour that looks a bit like grapefruit skin, which is a pretty rare thing in Madagascar pink quartz. Prices vary from a few tens to a few hundred yuan, depending on the quality.

Try to avoid using chemicals: Try to avoid getting it on perfumes, detergents, sweat and other chemicals as these can damage the surface. It's best to take it off before you bathe.
